CHAPTER FOURTEEN

BOLENDY SHIFTED NERVOUSLY in his seat. The conference chair had regained some equilibrium now that the group was safely ensconced in the new SysTech base, but a private interview with Kerelle was still a bit much for his nerves. She tried to project reassurance.

“I appreciate any help you can give me, Dr. Bolendy. If the missing people are still out there, they probably need aid, and I’ll be able to find them more quickly if I know more about who I’m looking for.” He looked a bit skeptical at that, and Kerelle had to privately agree. It wasn’t great odds that the scientists stranded outside during the bombing run would be found safe and sound. But her mission was to bring back as many of the conference attendees as possible - and when she heard that Nalea was among those missing, she couldn’t just give up. She owed it to Galhen to either find Nalea alive, or find definitive evidence she’d perished.

“I, ah, hope I don’t disappoint you, agent,” he replied, fiddling with the edge of his jacket. “The people we’re missing are all preeminent in their fields, and I’m very familiar with their body of work, but we’re not well acquainted personally.”

“Anything you can give me will help,” she told him, hoping she wasn’t being overly optimistic. Bolendy settled in with a shade of resignation.

“Well, Dr. Cherden Meria Ellnor is the assistant department chair at Valla University, and he’s most well known for his study on the cell regeneration effects of….”

It was a long afternoon. Kerelle took detailed notes on everything Bolendy could share; he was right, there wasn’t much here besides their professional achievements, but hopefully it would be enough to point her in the right direction. They were nearing the end of the list when she straightened up.

“Dr. Nalea Tarau Ambrel, recently made division head at Olstenfel. Quite an accomplishment at her age, she’s been a rising star for the past few years. Dr. Ambrel is a specialist in human-machine interfacing - ah, cybernetics,” he clarified, seeing Kerelle’s blank look. “She has contributed substantially to advances in integrating machine signals with the body, allowing for more responsive prosthetics.”

Kerelle kept a straight face, but inside her excitement grew. A cybernetic specialist, it was almost too much to be true. Nalea might have some idea on how to get this damn collar off, or at least where to start. Of course Kerelle would have to find her first, and convince her to help. Thinking objectively, she realized with a note of chagrin, she had no idea what Nalea was like, or if introducing herself as Galhen’s lover would get her anywhere.

Well, it was all a moot point if she was dead. Time to try and find out.

Their interview concluded, Kerelle headed back to the room she’d been using for quarters. It was small and cramped, but a little discomfort was worth it for the quiet and a door that locked. This was going to be hard enough without interruptions.
